Goodbye 2011, You've been a bad friend

I'll start by saying I have a lot to be thankful for. My family is amazing, I have a wonderful husband, great fur kids, and a good job. I've been healthier than I have been in years, and my house was spared in a horrible fire that burned down houses across the street.

That being said, 2011 has been a crappy year. While so many bloggers are recounting their year in happy blog posts, I remember my year in failed fertility treatments. I know I haven't really gotten into details on this blog, but this has really been the hardest year yet for me. I've literally been through the ringer, and I need a break from bad news.

For 2012, I don't have any resolutions except to do things that make me happy. To focus on the good things in life and to keep on keepin' on.

I wish all of you a very happy New Year's Eve and hope that 2012 is an amazing year for all of us!

A Very Pirate Christmas

This is a super random post. I hope you are all still my friends after reading.

A few weeks ago, I was Christmas shopping at Old Navy. Little did I know that there would be a Santa at Old Navy for Christmas photos. And little did I know that standing directly in front of me would be two people dressed as pirates.

So I did what any normal person would do...ask if I could take a picture with them.

My only regret is not wearing lipstick
Yes, these are real people who dress up like pirates.

They told me that they had a Facebook profile, and last night, I got curious and decided to look them up. That's where I found this goldmine of 515 YouTube videos. The one below is holiday-themed, complete with skeleton mummy and dancing Santa.

Enjoy the holiday cheer.

The only pics of us and our dog family semi-well behaved.

Me, Mr. Bee, and our rag-tag bunch of miscreant dogs. This is our family (besides our poor kitties who are constantly living in fear of having their food eaten).

These pics were taken at the house of Mr. Bee's mom, who just closed on the house this weekend! My dogs will be thrilled to spend weekends in Grandma's large yard.

Holiday Questions

Thank you to Eat, Laugh, Love, and Sometimes Shop for these 25 holiday questions. If you answer these, will you please comment so I can read everyone's answers?

25 Questions: Holiday Style

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate?  Hot Chocolate (or even better, Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate!)

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa ALWAYS wraps the presents. Even the small ones in the stockings.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? I love both. This year I like the white more, but I think colored lights are more fun and whimsical.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? Negative.

5. When do you hang your decorations up? Usually the first weekend in December.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?  Do crescent rolls count?

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Probably having slumber parties with my sister, then waking my parents up super early to open presents.

8. What is on your Christmas wish list? Absolutely nothing I need.

9. Do you open a gifts on Christmas Eve? Usually just one small gift.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? All of our ornaments are sentimental, so we just put those up.

11. Snow? Love it or dread it? LOVE IT! We've had virtually NO snow this year and I'm so bummed out!

12. Real tree or fake tree? I prefer real trees, but I don't know that I trust my animals with one just yet.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? A Miracle Keyboard. Then I discovered I could play by ear, and learning how to play notes didn't seem to be a priority.

14. What’s the most important thing about Christmas for you? Being with family.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? My Grandma-in-Law's Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge. Best ever.

16. What is your favorite tradition? Getting to my parents house and decorating the tree together, then watching Miracle on 34th Street with them on Christmas Eve.

17. What tops your tree? More tree. I don't have a tree topper in my life yet.

18. Do you prefer giving or receiving? Definitely giving. Would anyone actually write receiving? Just curious.

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Oh Holy Night

20. Candy canes, yuck or yum? No thanks.

21. Favorite Christmas movie? Miracle on 34th Street.

22. What do you leave for Santa? Santa doesn't get anything anymore - my dogs would it eat.

23. Do you have a Christmas morning tradition? These days, we get up, open gifts, then my mom makes amazing Eggs Benedict, which I don't like, so I make my own breakfast. Then we call our extended family and wish them a Merry Christmas. Even the Jewish members of my family.

24. Do you prefer to shop on-line or at the mall? Online is so much easier, but I still get most things in the store.

25. Christmas letter or Christmas card? Card. Some of the letters I've gotten over the years are just so depressing. I like to keep it short and sweet.

Santa's Coming!

I really have everything I need, so any of these would be icing on the cake. I'm so excited to go back and see my family and Mr. Bee's family in just a few short weeks!

KatherineBee's Christmas List:

Costco Shearling Boots

Would love a pair of these in black! I got a pair last year and I will never spend money on a pair of Ugg boots again. These are so comfortable and perfect for snowy winters.

Infinity Scarf

I'm the worst at scarves. These are a no-brainer. Would love one in black or mustard yellow.

Flat Black Boots

These would get a ton of use

Lush Bath Bombs
These are so amazing for your skin in winter. And I love me some bath stuff.

Photo Printer

This one looks simply amazing because you can dock your iPhone and print photos instantly. I'd love if I could also print photos from my digital camera on it too.

I love this Prada perfume. It's a lot "spicier" than most of the scents I wear, which smell like food, but I really love it. Because it has patchouli. And I like smelling like a hippie. A clean, well-dressed hippie.

Betsey Johnson
This is my go-to perfume, and it's being discontinued. Boooo....

Harry Potter DVD Box Set
This is one I'm not sure about. No more Harry Potter marathons with commercials? Great. Will I still watch all of them on ABC Family? Yes, definitely.

Target Gift Card
Contrary to everything my mother tried to teach me, I love Target.

Fun Tights

If any guys are reading this, these is a very good possibility that your significant other has a Pinterest account. If so, you'll never have to worry about finding the perfect gift.

Here's mine. Don't totally disregard the $1,500 Burberry bag. Just kidding. Kind of.

Send holiday cheer. Send holiday cards.

I am seriously lacking in holiday cheer this year. But, I promise if I get my act together, my Christmas cards will be fantastic. Yes, I got my first Christmas card yesterday and felt like the Grinch because I have not even started to think about cards this year.

Shutterfly contacted me again this year about promoting their holiday card promotion which I was more than happy to post about because their cards are amazing. I think this vintage-looking card has to be my favorite.

And yes, I think it's perfectly justifiable to send out photo cards of just you. Or you and your dogs. Or just your dogs. There really is no excuse for me to have not designed and sent my cards except that the reading on my Caring Meter has largely diminshed lately. It's been verified by a professional caring meter reader. And if you know where that is from, this is why we are friends.

I'm also thinking that everyone on my holiday list may get a photo calendar of my dogs, because who doesn't love Ellie and Tucker photos?

Thanksgiving and Dance Parties

Just got back from a whirlwind Thanksgiving trip. First time seeing my family in almost a year. I loved every second I was home. My Thanksgiving was filled with:

- Library book sales and Amish fireplaces
- Jam sessions with the family
- Baby goats and sheep
- Dancing hologram posters of Michael Jackson

- Lots and lots of time laughing
- Catching up with my best friends
- Meeting my best friend's baby for the first time
- More laughing

- Also, Mr. Bee biting my head during dinner, causing a large welt and a hilarious photo.

And no Thanksgiving is complete without a sisterly dance-off.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with laughs and loved ones!

My neighbor's house
Thursday night I went to bed just like any other night. Around 2am my dogs started barking. Mr. Bee started telling them to be quiet, and as he said that I looked up at my skylight. It was bright orange. I've been through the Malibu fires and the San Diego fires and I knew exactly what that meant. I told Mr. Bee to open the shades and as we looked outside we saw our house completely surrounded by flames. There were fire engines in the street, people running around yelling, and people knocking on doors to tell us to get out immediately.

The electricity was out so we grabbed out cell phones and wandered downstairs to find the dogs leashes and the cat carrier. The house was filled with smoke and all I could hear were people yelling to get out. I was able to find my cat Olivia, but couldn't find my other cat. I somehow found superhuman strength and literally threw the guest bed against the wall to find my other cat before we had to evacuate. At one point I started freaking out and my husband firmly told me, "I need you to pull yourself together." After that I was fine. I didn't know how I was fine. I talked to myself out loud and said, "Katie, everything is ok. God, please watch over us." It was like a mantra.

We had 10 minutes to get everything out. Mr. Bee managed to pull the garage door open so I could get my car out. I grabbed my jewelry box, my photos and my laptop. I had somehow gotten my Ugg boots on, a pair of jeans and a black shirt. I didn't have time to take anything else.

Where I walk my dogs
We got all the animals in the cars and started driving down the hill. I looked back at my house thinking it would be the last time I ever saw it. And I didn't care. I had my husband and my animals and I didn't care about anything else at that time. There was fire everywhere and people everywhere. I started calling my parents as I drove down the hill. I don't remember what I said, but it must have freaked them out.

I called Mr. Bee and told him we should go to one of the hotel properties I work for which is pet-friendly and one town over. We got there and checked in, then watched the news until the dog daycare opened at 6am. After dropping off the dogs we both went to work. Working just seemed like the best thing to do.

On the other side of my house
Since I work for a hotel, I was on the phone with our director's, TV stations, and the Red Cross all day long. I didn't really have a break to process what had happened. Every time the news came on I looked for shots of my house on fire. They finally put out a fire map and things didn't look good. We spend the night in the hotel (not that we slept) and around 12 the next day we were allowed to drive up the hill to see if our house was still standing.

Everything was completely charred as I drove up, and then I made a left on my street. There were four houses across the street from me that had completely burned. All that was left was the frame. The owners had just driven up to what was left to their houses. I burst into tears. I turned the corner to my cul de sac and saw my house was still standing. I broke down in my car and cried until my husband got there too. Our front door was open and we walked inside to see that everything was still intact. There was plenty of smoke and ash, but everything was still there. I was astounded - so grateful and so sad for my neighbor's that lost everything. There is no rhyme or reason why my house is still there.

Thank you all for your prayers, texts and tweets, they meant the world to me.

Here's a quick video of my house and where my neighbor's houses burned. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

The Buzz on: Burt's Bees for Sensitive Skin

Burt's Bees products. So good my dog ate them. So natural I didn't freak out.

Yes, my dog Tucker actually ate the stash of products that I received as a BzzAgent. Fortunately, there was enough to salvage a fair amount to test. Which I did. And it was amazing.

My skin is super sensitive. The only things I use on it are Dove Soap and Pond's Dry Skin Cream. And this is after testing every face wash and moisturizer from Bliss to Clinique. My skin is constantly dry and flaky and reacts horribly to everything I throw at it. So when I tested the Burt's Bees products and my face didn't turn tomato red and light itself on fire, I was ecstatic!

I liked the face cleanser too, but I've been on my Dove Soap kick for so long that it's hard for me to make the switch.

Plus, the products have the word "Bee" in it. How do I not like something that is related to bees in any way?

I'd definitely recommend the Burt's Bees products to anyone with sensitive skin. Your dogs will love it too!

Disclaimer: Yes, I received these products for free and it was awesome. No, I'd never blog about anything I didn't really like. Ask me about the time someone wanted me to blog about pants that give you a bigger butt. Didn't happen.

True Life: I met Weird Al Yankovic

If you've ever wanted to read a post where I totally nerd out, here it is. This weekend I was able to cross one off my bucket list by meeting Weird Al Yankovic. Yes, this has always been a lifelong dream of mine.

I am the first to admit I have a very sick sense of humor. I've been a Weird Al fan since I was a kid. When I heard he was coming to Reno I was beyond excited. Then I found out that I might be out of town that weekend, so I put off buying tickets. When I later discovered I'd be free that night I immediately went to the Ticketmaster website and found out the show was SOLD OUT. Really? There's that many Weird Al fans in Reno?!

After a ton of Craigslist searches, I found a pair of tickets. Mr. Bee ventured out to the ghetto to purchase them for me (puffy pink heart love you for that one). Then my AMAZING friend MaryBeth came through with the news that she got me on the guest list for the night! We got to the concert and found out that her contact (who happened to be Weird Al's bassist and was one of the nicest people ever) had also gotten us Backstage Passes for after the show in addition to ridiculously awesome seats. So we ended up giving the other tickets to someone who was hoping to buy tickets there.

If you've read this far, you are truly an amazing blog friend.

This is the face of absolute joy.
Do any of you have really random celebrity crushes or people you'd love to meet?

An Update of Sorts

I've been putting off updating because...I have absolutely no good news.

We decided to go ahead and do another FET cycle. I started taking Estrace to help build my lining towards the end of September, with the transfer date right around Halloween. When I went in for my first lab tests, my Estrogen level was sky high (around 2,000 when it should've been around 3-400), and my lining was still craptastically thin.

We decided to up the Estrace anyway and go ahead as planned. When we went for the lining check before the transfer, my lining was still thin (only 6.5 when they were shooting for a min. of 8). We postponed the transfer a week and stayed on medication, hoping waiting for a week would help. Instead, it somehow had an opposite effect, and my lining reduced to 5.5. The transfer cycle was canceled. Crying ensued.

It hurts so badly to put so much time, money and energy into something that comes to people so easily. Mr. Bee and I went to lunch this weekend and ended up at the sushi bar next to a woman bragging that she spent almost her whole pregnancy in rehab. Really? Really?!? I hear things like that and don't understand how there is a God who gives children to people who don't care and can't care for them.

Things have been tough for both me and Mr. Bee. Insurance doesn't cover anything (not even lab tests), so every time we attempt a cycle it's like we're throwing money away.

Trying to keep my head up and find hope. The next cycle we try we're adding Viagra in hopes to get more blood flow to the uterus. Other than that, there's really not much we can do. And if it doesn't work, at least my husband should enjoy me being a love machine for an entire month. At least that's how I think Viagra works.

...sorry if you were stopping by and hoping not to read about linings or Viagra or meth addicts.

Halloween Catch-Up

Hope everyone had a great Halloween! Mr. Bee and I had a Halloween party last Friday which was lots of fun.

We're so lucky to have made such good friends out here!

We even had a costume contest!

On actual Halloween I was lucky enough to get to dress up for work. Unfortunately, I was shot by some rogue cowboys.
Don't shoot! I have cookies!

Fortunately I made it out alive. When I got home that night we carved pumpkins, passed out candy, watched scary movies and dressed up the dogs. You know, normal things.

Ellie Bee, Tucker Lobster

Snow White and Gross Eye Pumpkins

And then last night we celebrated our three year wedding anniversary! Wow, my last week was jam-packed with things to celebrate!

How was your Halloween?

The Buzz on: Pumpkins and Scarves

It's finally fall!!! One of my favorite things about fall is pumpkins. Pumpkin food, pumpkin candles, pumpkin patches, you name it, I love it.

Last weekend Mr. Bee and I tried to go to a pumpkin patch and farm. It ended up being closed (on a Sunday before Halloween?!?) so we ended up going to a smaller one to walk around and enjoy fall.

Doesn't the pumpkin patch look amazing on my new iPhone 4S camera? Yes, I finally upgraded from the 3GS, and it was definitely worth it.

Yay new camera!

Me and my new scarf from my scarf swap buddy!

Mr. Bee and his pumpkin pal

Amazing fall leaves

My lovely fall scarf is courtesy of Lindsey at Turtles and Pearls. She also sent me some delicious trail mix (that Mr. Bee promptly devoured) and a delicious-smelling pumpkin candle, which I've almost completely gone through. Thank you Lindsey!

We're hoping to go to the good pumpkin patch this weekend, so I'll have more pumpkin pictures next week. Get pumped up! We're also hosting a Halloween party tomorrow at our house. Can't wait to share pictures and see everyone's costumes! Happy Halloweek!

Another Hair Dye Post

Impulsive me really wants to dye my hair red again. So last night I played around with the makeover tool and scared the bejeezus out of myself when I donned a red hairdo and looked exactly like my little sister.

(Yes, I'm wearing a tank top. It's just hard to see - promise)

I guess I can never tell people we aren't related again (kidding!)

Here are some of my other fav redhead pics via Pinterest.

Just trying to avoid this again...
