Gluten Free is the Way to Bee

So my doctor thinks I may have a gluten allergy and asked me to go on a wheat-free diet. This is tough, since I eat mostly vegetarian cuisine, and also because I'm super picky. Fortunately, I can (and would love to) live off of rice. I have to say that I had no idea that half the things I eat contain gluten, and it's definitely going to be a struggle. Hopefully after a few weeks I'll feel amazing and this will all be worth it. I have to say that my main food staples are fortunately still on the menu for me! This of course contains:

Chipotle
YAHOO!! WHOOPIE!!

And...York Peppermint Patties
I almost always have some of these small guys around.

Some things I've picked up recently:
-Mangos
-Avocado
-Wheat-free pasta
- Rice noodles for Pad Thai
- Quinoa
- Cashews

Hopefully this will be a really positive change in my life and health and I'll benefit from this. Do you have any favorite gluten-free recipes or know of any good blogs?

  1. Yep you need to download the Whole Foods app for your iPhone. It comes with tons of recipes and you can sort by gluten free. Best part, you can turn the recipe into a shopping list so it's really easy. Hope you feel better soon!!

  2. I'm not a cook, so I don't have recipes, but I have a few tips!
There is a newer GF bakery in Escondido with a store front called GNI Bakery. They sell pastries, beer, etc and are fantastic! There is also another new one on the coast, but I don't think they are a store front.

Sammy's and Pizza Fusion both have GF pizza crusts that are delicious!

I am not GF, but I have a few family members that have Celiac disease, so I am familiar with their way of eating! Good luck!

  4. A good friend of mine is Gluten free and at first is was hard for her, but once you get into the swing of it things get A LOT easier. More and more gluten free bakeries and even pizza places are popping up all over. And I have a GREAT gluten free red velvet cupcake recipe if you are interested. Good luck!! (check out theglutenfreebettycrocker also!)

  5. Lauren - I'd love your recipe! I still haven't baked anything yet (I'm a little scared).

Jenn - Definitely downloaded the Whole Foods app. It's like a holy grail of gluten-freeness.

A Texas Gal - Thanks so much for that link - there was a ton of helpful info there!

Melissa - Thanks for the suggestions! I definitely need to swing by that bakery and check out those pizza places. I have to say that I'm a pizza lover, and will definitely miss whole wheat crust. Hope GF crust is good too!
